Tanager athletes attend USD Coyote Football Camp
Twenty-two Vermillion High School athletes attended the University of South Dakota Coyote Football Camp during the 11-man session that was held July 18-20. The session drew over 800 student-athletes and 25 teams from around the Midwest region.

The USD football coaching staff gave personal instruction on techniques and fundamentals of the game. Each team was allotted practice time to work on offensive and defensive schemes. Each team also had three controlled scrimmage sessions held against a different opposing team each day of the camp. Vermillion High School faced Gehlen Catholic High School (Le Mars, IA), South Hamilton High School (Jewell, IA) and Garretson High School (South Dakota) during their three scrimmages.

Attending the camp from VHS were Luke Heine, Gerrit Heine, Alex Anderson-Kahl, Jordan Merrigan, Billy Kjelden, Heath Hubert, Bennett Johnson, Ryan Husby, JR Moore, Jerrod Freidel, Jackson Freidel, Kylen Freidel, Reid Meierkort, Nick Mart, Travis Jerred, Tanner Mart, Mike Oberle, Andrew Eidem, Earl Kiertzner, Chris Mart, Tom Mollet and CJ Haakinson. Vermillion High School coaches in attendance included Gary Culver, Jason Huska, Jason Gault and Bart Miller.

Gary Culver, head football coach of the Tanagers, said, "Coach Meierkort and his staff do a tremendous job of hosting the Coyote Football Camp, especially with the large number of athletes and teams attending this particular session. It is extremely well-organized and the athletes are able to work on individual techniques as well as work with their respective team during the three days of camp.

"The camp really provides us a great opportunity to work together as a team, both offensively and defensively, and to experiment with different personnel in various positions. I was impressed with both our older and younger players during the camp as we look forward to the start of our fall season," he said.
