Kayla Thompson, Vermilion, took the top prize at the second annual Youth Rock Showcase at the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls on Aug. 10.
Thompson, who is 14, is a singer/songwriter. She performed a solo set on the Front Porch Stage at the fair and was chosen to receive $500 worth of recording session time at Pulse River Studios in Beresford.
Four other acts participated. Thompson was selected based on audience preference, vocal and songwriting skills, and all over professionalism, according to Kristen Lueth, from the Front Porch.
The Youth Rock Showcase is sponsored by Sioux Falls Music. Bands, musicians and singers may register to participate in June 2008.
