The Alcester-Hudson Invitational cross country meet was held Monday, Sept. 17 at the Alcester Golf Course, involving both the boys' and girls' varsity and JV divisions.

Team placements were: first – West Sioux, IA; second – Vermillion; and third – Elk Point/Jefferson.

Girls' varsity results were: Ashley Unruh (Freeman Academy), first (15:28.51). For the Tanagers, Lydia Ford (second – 15:34.50), and Blair Gilkyson – sixth (15:48.52).

Also running for Vermillion were Celeste Sawyers (25th); Hannah Nehlich-Arobba (29th); Sophie Nehlich-Arobba (31st); and Emily Renner (35th).

"We won the meet against S.D. competition with Class B scoring (official) and also Class A. This also gave us our first look at some of our regional competition. Lydia and Blair both ran very good races as they really picked up their middle part of the race," said Coach Fischbach.

JV Race: Beth Szymonski (VHS) – first (15:14.76); Cassie Donahoe (VHS) – 11th (17:18.31). "They both have been running very well lately," the coach said.

Boys' varsity team standings: first – West Sioux; second – Centerville; third – Vermillion.

Individual boy results: C. Myott (Centerville) – first (17:03.06). For Vermillion: Casey Carlson – 11th (18:26.50), Broc Gauer – 15th (18:52.67); Ryan Angelo – 16th (18:56.26); and Brad Orr – 19th (19:05.95); also Dexter Mehlhaf (47th) and D.J Donahoe (52nd).

"The boys really ran as a group today. The top four pushed each other. This was Ryan's best race of the year. If S.D. Class A scoring were used, we would have won the race," coach Fischbach said.
