'Great Akron Scarecrow Festival' set for Saturday
The Friendship & Service Club of Akron, IA, will host the seventh annual "Great Akron Scarecrow Festival" and contest in the Akron City Park. The event opens to the public at 10 a.m. and will last as long as the crowd does – approximately 5 p.m.

A number of activities for all ages are being planned, but primary to the event is the celebration of the scarecrows. What a huge variety we have seen over the years. Creativity is never at a loss.

Everyone is invited to create a scarecrow and enter it into the contest. The scarecrows will be sold at auction at 2 p.m. – last year, there were over 60 entries, and the top-selling scarecrow sold for $135.

Over 40 crafters will take part in the festival. Other events scheduled for the day include kids' games, a petting zoo, a jumping cage, face painting, cow pie lottery, a chain saw artist and free entertainment in the gazebo located in Akron's City Park.

A variety of food will also be available, including brats, taco-in-a-bag, funnel cakes and home-made pie.
