Household hazardous waste will be collected at Vermillion Missouri Valley Recycling, 840 N. Crawford Rd., on Friday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. HHW will be collected at Yankton Transfer and Recycling, 23rd and Kellen Gross Dr., on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents may go to either site. No business, school, or governmental waste will be accepted. These entities may call 677-7076 to make alternative arrangement if required. There will be a $10 charge per vehicle to help defray costs. Correct change will help keep lines moving. Checks should be made out to: City of Vermillion MVR.
This event is for household waste and does not include business waste. The event is provided by the Vermillion/ Yankton Joint Powers Solid Waste System, and co-sponsored by Keep Yankton Beautiful and Clay, Yankton, and Union counties.
Household Hazardous Materials (HHM) are materials used in and around the home that are caustic, flammable, toxic, or radioactive. Infectious and explosive materials are also defined as HHM, but they will not be accept ed in this collection event.
What makes a HHM a HHW? A product is considered HHW if the product has been banned or canceled by the EPA.
Examples of HHW are arsenic, DDT, chlordane, toxaphene, carbon tetrachloride and dieldrin.
Materials that should be disposed include dry products that have gotten wet; liquid products that have frozen or dried out; items in containers with missing or unidentifiable labels, that are in poor condition.
Products that have expired or are unwanted should also be taken to the recycling centers for disposal.
HHMs include cleaning supplies, room deodorizers, oven cleaners, sanitizers, drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, NiCad batteries, floor polish, silver and metal polishes, nail polish, furniture polish, mothballs, floor wax, disinfectants, powdered bleach.
Household Products: Florescent bulbs, mercury switches and thermometers, bug sprays, flea collars, peroxides, and medicines.
Shop, Hobby Area, and Repair Supplies: Latex paint, oil based paint, used oil, used anti- freeze, cleaners, thinners and solvents, lubricants, glues and adhesives, stains, strippers and preservatives, lead acid batteries, oil filters, and unknowns.
Yard, Garden and Farm Supplies: Pesticides, herbicides and other products.
The state Department of Agriculture will be on site to receive farm products.
