After battling to a 0-0 halftime score, Dell Rapids capitalized on two Tanager turnovers to come away with the win. The first score came after Earl Kiertzner's screen pass was intercepted and taken back for a touchdown.
Dell Rapids scored after another Tanager turnover in the fourth quarter to make the final score 12-0. With the loss the junior varsity team evened their record for the season at 1-1.
"We just couldn't put a sustained drive together the entire game, and obviously our turnovers played a big part in the final outcome," said coach Jason Huska, offensive coordinator. "We just have to regroup and play with greater determination on offense in the next game."
"I was really pleased with our defensive effort the entire game," said coach Roger Heirigs, defensive coordinator. "We played very well as a team and didn't give up any big plays all game. Hopefully we can continue to play at this level on the defensive side in our remaining games on the junior varsity schedule."
Offensively for the Tanagers, Earl Kiertzner completed four passes for 59 yards and Jordan Robinson rushed 17 times for 33 years. Tanner Mart added eight carries for 29 yards. JR Moore caught two passes for 37 yards.
Defensively, Tanner Mart lead the Tanagers with six tackles, followed by Jeff Anglin, Taylor Clark and Nick Anglin, five each; Chris Cameron and Tom Amundson, four each; Tony Thomas, Chris Mart and Grant Lueders, three each; JR Moore, Kylen Freidel, Will Schaffer, Tyler Steele, Greg Anderson, Evan Hanson, two each; Lance Hubert, Brian Hansen, Cody Merrigan, John Noteboom, Chase Allen and Mike Walker, one each.
Tanner Mart and Chris Cameron also each had a quarterback sack, and Tony Thomas intercepted a Dell Rapids pass for the Tanager defense.
