The VHS Invitational cross country meet was held Friday, Sept. 14, at the USD course, involving both the boys' and girls' varsity and JV divisions. No team scores were compiled.

Girls' varsity results

Bobby McLaury (EP/J), first (16:00.71). For the Tanagers: Lydia Ford, sixth (16:33.55); and Blair Gilkyson, 10th (16:44.31).

Also running for Vermillion were Sophie Nehlich-Arobba (19th), Hannah Nehlich-Arobba (20th), Celeste Sawyers (24th), Jana Bye (33rd) and Emily Renner (35th).

JV race

Beth Szymonski (VHS), first (18:57.58); and Cassie Donahoe (VHS), third (20:02.99).

Coach Kelly Fischbach had these remarks: "I was very pleased with our times and efforts. Everyone's times were faster than last week's on the dame course, even though it was windy today. We just need to keep improving. Lydia and Blair have been in the top 10 in every meet this year. Our other runners are closing the gap from those two, which we need going into regionals."

Boys' varsity results

Nate McKewan (SC Heelan), first (17:22.13). For Vermillion: Casey Carlson, sixth (18:16.27); Brad Orr, 16th (19:54.65); Ryan Angelo, 18th (20:12.88); also, Dexter Mehlhaf (22nd) and D.J. Donahoe (23rd).

JV division

Alex Card, third (16:57.71); Robert Osterberg, fourth (17:15.43); Nick Britten, seventh (18:15.36); also, Mathew Moore, 10th; Tevin Boehrens, 11th; and Sam Robinson, 13th.

"All our kids ran very well today. Each of them ran at least 10 seconds faster than we did a week ago. Our young kids are really improving and are starting to challenge for a varsity spot. Casey Carlson has been consistent all year and shows great leadership," Fischbach said.
