The JV Vermillion Tanagers softball team took its first loss of the season yesterday in game one of a doubleheader versus Mitchell Gold.
The Tanagers lost 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tanagers only mustered up four hits, but were able to capitalize on Mitchell's mistakes. Lindsay Robinet had three hits and one RBI. Lizzie Bye took the loss for the Tanagers. Vermillion fought back in the second game, winning 11-5. Seven Tanagers had at least one hit. Claire Jones was 2 for 2 with three runs scored. Ellen Brown and Sami Girard each had to RBIs. Lizzie Bye went the distance, striking out five and walking just one. The Tanagers ended their regular season at 7-1, and will play in the state tournament Sept. 29 and 30 in Sioux Falls. Claire Jones, Vermillion shortstop, hangs on to tage out a Mitchell runner – even though mowed over.
