The Vermillion Tanagers finished the South Dakota High School Soccer Tourn-ament on Saturday with a sweet victory over a very tough Groton team clinching 3rd place in the tournament. "The team was very excited with the victory," states head coach Dave LaCombe. Early in the first half Groton got two goals, one from a penalty kick and the second from an own goal.
It took 30 minutes before they started to play the game. Hannah Nelich-Arobba got the Tanagers their first goal from a penalty kick. Things started to turn for them and Cori Bonte tied the game late in the first half. They came out in the second half as a totally different team. When it was all said and done, the Tanagers had scored a total of five goals. Cori led the Tanagers with 3 goals and Hannah had 2 goals. Margaret Mueller led the Tanagers with two assist. Sophie Nelich-Arobba and Ashley Brunick each had one assist in the victory. Michaela Telleria, Sam Massey, Casey North, Angie Christensen, Megan Amundson, Lacy Leichtman and Tracy Howe played outstanding on de-fense. Tasha Donnely started as the goalie and recorded 5 saves. Jenna Peterson came in the second half and had 2 saves. Stacy Kjelden and Megan Bottolfson played strong on offense. "This team really did believe in themselves and I am very proud of them," said LaCombe.
During the award presentation it was also announced that Vermillion was awarded the 2007 Sportsmanship Award. "This is the second time receiving this prestigious award," LaCombe said. "I also received it 2003 as the Head Coach for Yankton."
