SF Roosevelt edges JV football team
The Vermillion High School junior varsity football team dropped a close game to the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Roughriders by a final score of 18-14. The game was played at SF Roosevelt High School last Monday, Sept. 24. With the loss, the junior varsity team evened their record for the season at 2-2.

Andrew Eidem stole the offensive show for the JV squad as he scored all the points for the young Tanagers. He scored two touchdowns on runs of 40 yards and three yards, and added a two-point conversion after the second touchdown. Eidem rushed 24 times for 169 yards total in the game. Overall, the Tanagers totaled 256 yards offense. Also rushing were Tanner Mart with nine carries for 42 yards and Earl Kiertzner with two carries for 10 yards. Kiertzner also passed for 35 yards.

Coach Jason Huska, offensive coordinator, said, "I thought we rushed the football very effectively against a solid SF Roosevelt defensive unit. Our offensive line really came off the ball well and maintained their blocks much better than previous games. Obviously, Andrew Eidem had a great day rushing the football for us. He seemed to keep getting stronger as the game progressed.

Defensively, Jeff Anglin lead the Tanagers with nine tackles, followed by Tanner Mart (eight), Kylen Freidel (eight), Grant Lueders (seven), Tom Amundson (seven), Tony Thomas (six), Tyler Steele (four), and Chris Cameron (four). Cameron also forced two fumbles and recovered a umble.

Coach Roger Heirigs, defensive coordinator, said, "I was pleased with our defensive effort for the game. We really only gave up two scores from the defensive side as their third touchdown came on a kickoff return. Had we not had that specialty team breakdown, we probably would have won the game. I think we found out that we can compete against anyone, no matter how big the school might be."
