Tanager volleyball two-week team potpouri
On Sept. 17, the Tanager volleyball team had mixed results. First, they lost to the Lady Red Raiders in Wagner with a 2-3 collapse after winning their first two games.

The match score was 25-23, 25-17, 14-25, 9-25, and 15-7.

Coach Lenni Billberg said, "Great start, miserable finish. Our offense stopped producing and the game swayed to Wagner."

VHS player significant statistical results: Raychel Lorenz – 28 SA, 17 digs; Alexa Walker – 19 D; Alicia Brown – 14 K, 25 D, 10 B; Tania Faria – 8 K, 9 SA, 1 A, 11 D, 2 B; Sierra Allen – 4 K, 2 D, 5 B.

Next, the Southeast Area VB Classic was held in Elk Point, on Sept. 22 with matches between Milbank, Harrisburg, and Tea Area, each vs Vermillion. The Tanagers won the Milbank match 3-2 (13-25, 25-23, 25-6, 16-25, 17-15.

Coach Billberg said, "A great match for our Tanagers – defeating the number-one team in the state can really make a season. Our girls hung together to out-defend, out-hit and out-block the towering Milbank ladies."

Significant statistics were: Lorenz – 21 SA, 2 D; Hannah Korcuska – 11 D; Walker – 4 A, 17 D; Brown – 10 K, 17 D, 5 B; Faria – 15 K, 21 SA, 7 A, 5 D; DeNell Dykstra – 7 K, 4A, 2 D.

The Harrisburg match also went five games (30-28, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 11-15) for a Tanager heart-stopping loss. "A tough loss, but we showed the Tanagers can compete against anyone. Defense will continue to be our way to success," Billberg said.

Losing stats: Lorenz – 21 SA, 7 D; Korcuska – 9 D; Dykstra – 8 K, 1 A, 2 D; Walker – 16 D; Brown – 8 K, 3 A, 18 D, 9 B; Kayla Gale – 9 K, 3 D; Faria – 8 K, 20 SA, 4 A, 6 D, 5 B.

The Tea Area match went three games with Vermillion losing 2-1 (25-15, 20-25, 23-25).

Coach Billberg evaluated the team's performances: "After a great start, we simply ran out of gas; we showed we are a dominant team, but need a little more depth and finish (if we wish) to continue our path toward (being) one of South Dakota's best."

Stats: Lorenz – 9 SA, 6 D; Walker – 10 D; Brown – 4 K, 10 D, 1 B; Kayla Gale – 8 K, 3 D; Faria – 2 K, 7 SA, 2 A, 6 D.

The varsity team's record is now 7-7.
