Allen, a distinguished professor of English at UCLA, will lecture about the ancient notion that man is the measure of all things and its importance for an understanding of Shakespeare's exploration of retrospection.

One of Phi Beta Kappa's Visiting Scholars, Allen is currently president of the Renaissance Society of America and was senior editor of its national journal, Renaissance Quarterly, from 1993 to 2001. He began teaching at UCLA in 1970, where he is now distinguished professor of English and a member of the Italian department.
