For the second straight week, South Dakota put together a 4-0 mark at tournaments on the road. With its win over Winona State earlier this week, the Coyotes improved its season record to 9-0, which is the best mark by the Coyotes during the five-year coaching tenure of head coach Brian Lamppa.
Missouri Western State opened the match with a 30-21 win in game one. After that defeat, USD controlled the action. South Dakota won the next three games by scores of 30-23, 30-25 and 30-24.
Hruska (Sioux Falls), who reached double digits in kills for the eighth time in nine matches, registered 19 kills on 37 attacks and hit .432 against Missouri Western State. Junior middle hitter Heather Hult (Davis) recorded another strong performance by hitting .483 (15K-OE-31A). Junior outside hitter Laura Slagter (Roseville, MN) recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 22 digs.
Sophomore setter Gina Baldwin (Mitchell) had 48 set assists while libero Amber Kobus (Columbus, NE) contributed 22 digs.
In the 30-21 loss to Missouri Western in game one, the Coyotes struggled offensively by hitting just .021 with 11 kills on 46 attacks. USD turned things around in game two by hitting .294 with 18 kills on 51 attacks (three errors). The strong hitting performance allowed USD to tie the match with a 30-23 decision over the Griffons. In a 30-25 win in game three, USD hit .152 with 15 kills on 59 attacks. The Coyotes finished off the match with a 30-24 game four victory as the offense found its mark. They hit .263 with 21 kills on 57 attacks (six errors).
South Dakota will now head to the Bearcat Classic for four matches in Maryville, MO, on Sept. 7-8. First, USD will face Northwest Missouri State at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. Later that day, USD will battle Newman University. The Coyotes also have matches on Saturday, Sept. 8 with Southwest Baptist and Texas A&M International.
