The Friends of the W. H. Over Museum is a 41-year old group which was formedto assist the W. H. Over Museum in its activities and for the past several years, have been responsible for the continued operation of the Museum. It's mission statement states that it is to collect, preserve, document, exhibit, research, and interpret objects of natural and cultural history, primarily of South Dakota and its indigenous peoples. These objects shall be displayed in ways to provide appropriate understanding, education, and appreciation of this region.
In order to effectively carry out this mission, the Friends organization needs to raise the necessary funds. The Friends do this by appealing to our members, civic organizations, local governing bodies, and by conducting fundraising events. For many years, the Friends have been one of the
agencies which are assisted by dollars from the United Way.The organization offers a constant round of activities and programs for all citizens of Vermillion to enjoy.Probably the most visible is the annual Christmas festival which is scheduled for December 2 this year.
Just recently, two Boy Scouts who are working towards their Eagle rank, completed renovation of the Discovery Room which is a room designed for children's use when they visit the Museum. They are free to touch to their heart's content.Exhibits are undergoing some enhancement and many of the display cases have been repaired and laminated with wood covering. Soon there will be a changing exhibit which will display historic aspects of Vermillion from business and clubs to churches. The first group to have their display ready will be the Vermillion Lions Club.
The W. H. Over Museum is a willing participant in all aspects of Vermillion
activities. Area organizations use of the building for some of their activities and it is the site of festivities before USD football and basketball games.A recently formed Over Kids' Club offers quarterly activities for children up through middle school. The museum schedules several children's activities through the year; coming up on October 28 is the annual pumpkin carving party. For the second year, one of its fellow United Way agencies, Big Friend, Little Friend, will be making this one of their scheduled activities.
The Friends are grateful for the support given them by the United Way and plan to continue to offer the Museum and its activities for the enjoyment of all Vermillion and Clay County citizens. Its motto is "Come on over to the Over". Our daily hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
