The chance to apply for the all-expenses-paid state of South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Youth Conference Contest ends Nov. 2. The community will be pleased if a Vermillion area high school student is chosen to be one of the winners.
Any student in grades 10, 11 or 12 whose application shows them to be academically in good standing and whose extracurricular activities and community service demonstrate his or her leadership potential could be one of the three students chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of South Dakota to represent the state in a four day Americanism Conference in Valley Forge, PA, March 13-16, 2008. Such an invitation will be based on the candidate's application and typewritten essay of 500 words or less, the topic of which is "America – Land of the Free Because of the Brave."
Except for discretionary spending while touring Philadelphia and Valley Forge historic sites, all expenses for the winners are paid by the American Legion Auxiliary including the program fees, room and board and transportation. Candidates must be sponsored by an American Legion Auxiliary Unit, American Legion Post or SAL Squadron, but are not required to be related to a Veteran or American Legion Post or Auxiliary member.
