Boys', girls' track teams place at SSC Invitational
The Marsha Kobernick Invitational cross country meet was held Thursday, Sept. 27 at South Sioux City, NE, involving a mixture of classes (AA, A, and B) – both the boys' and girls varsity and JV Divisions.

The Vermillion girls placed second in their division, scoring 35 points. Crofton won with 23.

Individual varsity results were: Britney Dean (Sloan, IA), first (15:39.34); for the Tanagers: Lydia Ford (fourth – 15:42.79); Blair Gilkyson – 10th (16:57.87); Celeste Sawyers (13th – 17:21.90); Beth Szymonski – (19th) 18:16.46. Also, Emily Renner placed 32nd. Cassie Donahoe was 45th (20:04.48) in the JV (400 M), all classes running together.

"The girls ran a great meet as a team. To finish second at a big meet like this is a tribute to their hard work. Lydia had a fantastic race, finishing eighth overall, right up there with the Yankton and Sioux City runners. Blair had a solid performance, Celeste had her best meet so far and Beth ran her first varsity race and stepped up high. The conference meet will be held at the Vermillion Don Baker CC Course on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.," said coach Fischbach.

Boys' varsity team standings: First – Norfolk Catholic; second – Missouri Valley. Vermillion placed eighth.

Individual results for Vermillion: Casey Carlson – 14th (18:37.75); Brad Orr – 29th (18:52.67); Ryan Angelo – 42nd; and Lex Card – 48th; also, D.J. Donahoe (59th).

JV boys (500 M): Robert Ostrerberg – 49th (22:07. 81); Sam Robinson – 83rd running unattached; Nathan Ford – 63rd.

Seventh and eighth boys (2,000 M): Nick Britten – 8th (7:46.61) and Christian Davis – 35th. "This was a very tough field, running against the likes of Yankton, all the Sioux City schools and some Omaha schools. All the Vermillion kids who were there ran very well. Casey continues to run strong and shows great leadership for the team," said coach Fischbach.
