Drs. Kim and Gail Peterson will be the featured speakers at a special Alzheimer's forum Thursday, Nov. 8 at Avera the Avera Majestic Bluffs Gathering Place. The forum, free and open to the public, will begin with a light dinner at 6:15 p.m., followed by the Petersons' presentation – "Caregiving: The Alzheimer's Journey" – at 6:45 p.m. and a question-and-answer session at 7:45 p.m.
Families go through a number of stages when they are living with dementia or any other chronic illness, from wondering about getting a diagnosis to accepting the finality of the disease. In this session participants will learn about common stages and strategies to deal with caregiving challenges.
Kim Peterson, M.D., is a geriatrician who has been director of a memory diagnostic center and frequently provides medical and legal consultation for dementia care issues. Gail Peterson, Ph.D., is an educator who was the cognitive specialist for a memory diagnostic center. Together, the Petersons provide education at more than 150 conferences each year, and in 2005 were awarded the National Alzheimer's Association Special Service Award.
