Appropriately named Downtown Discounts cards, they may be purchased at a number of downtown shops for $10.
The cards were created by the Downtown Vermillion Action Team (DVAT). Special savings are available at 27 downtown merchants to shoppers who use the card.
"The cards came about in direct response to a recent survey that was completed earlier in 2007," said Paula Keller, who is active in DVAT. "We had a really good response from the staff and faculty at USD. There was qualitative and quantitative information on the survey."
One of the desires of USD students, faculty and staff who took the survey was to receive discounts in the downtown shopping district.
"We also want to make downtown a destination for people to shop, dine and play," Keller said. "The goal is to get more people downtown."
The money raised from the sale of the cards will be used by the DVAT to promote downtown Vermillion and improve the overall appearance and atmosphere of the area.
The USD SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) group is helping to sell the cards, and will receive a portion of the profits made from their sale.
The cards are available at Carey's, Charlie's Closet, Coffee Shop Gallery, Fullerton Lumber, Heart and Soul Fitness, Main Street Books, Nook 'n Cranny, Nygren's True Value, Pressing Matters, Willson Florist, Vermillion Theatre, Vermillion Beauty Shop and Amy's Whoopti Do Hair Salon.
Cards may also be purchased by calling Keller at 624-7004.
The mission of the DVAT is to build a coalition of downtown business/property owners for the purpose of promoting Main Street's shops as a collective group.
