The board of directors and staff of the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce and Development Company voted unaminously last week to approve a resolution of welcome and support for the Hyperion Energy Center.
Hyperion is currently in the first phase of its work after announcing last July that Union County is in the running as a final site for a new, 400,000 barrel-per-day oil refinery.
The company, based in Texas, estimates that construction could begin in 2009 and be completed in 2013 if all goes as planned with the permitting process.
The site of the proposed facility is approximately eight miles east of Vermillion, in an area of Union County north of Elk Point.
The VCDC resolution of support was approved at a meeting of the organization's board Oct. 25.
"It fits our test of mission," said Lisa Ketcham, the VCDC's executive director.
