Team effort allows VHS to overpower Cardinals
In a superb team effort, the Vermillion Tanagers overpowered the South Sioux City Cardinals 69-49 in boys' varsity basketball Dec. 13 at South Sioux City. The Tanagers shot an impressive 64 percent from the field in the contest.

"We came out and played hard and played as a team," said VHS coach Jason Huska. "Jordan (Boots) got us going offensively. We played much better team defense and that was the difference. Good road win for our team."

The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 7 of 12 from long distance.

The Tanagers took the lead 17-14 after the first quarter, and margins of 20-11 and 15-13 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 52-38 going into the final period.

VHS now has a record of 2-1, while SSC fell to 0-1.

VHS made 6 of 9 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 28 of 44 field goal attempts, while SSC was 21 of 53 from the field. The Cardinals hit 4 of 10 free throw attempts.

Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.

"Jordan Boots led our scoring attack with 38 points," Coach Huska said. "Alex Schaack contributed with 12 assists."
