VHS varsity boys defeat Tigers 69-49
Performing well together as a team, the Vermillion Tanagers overpowered the Harrisburg Tigers 69-49 in boys' basketball Dec. 7 at Harrisburg.

The season-opening win gave VHS a record of 1-0 while Harrisburg boys fell to 0-1.

This game was the Tanagers' season-opener.

Jordan Boots scored 30 points, followed by Alex Schaack and Broc Gauer, who each scored 14. Gauer also pulled down 15 rebounds and made seven assists.

The Tanagers fell behind 20-19 after the first quarter, led 37-29 at halftime, and then held a lead of 55-40 going into the final period.

"We were a bit rusty the first quarter both offensively and defensively," said VHS coach Jason Huska. "The second quarter really began the improvement. The second half was the difference. We moved the ball well on offense and then defensively we tightened up. This was a good road win."

VHS connected on 7 of 22 three-point attempts and hit 12 of 19 free-throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 25 of 56 from the field, while Harrisburg boys were 20 of 50 from the field. Harrisburg boys connected on 3 of 10 three-point attempts and made 6 of 13 free throw attempts.

VHS held a 37-25 edge on the boards.
