The Vermillion School Board issued administrative contracts at its Jan. 14 meeting to Mark Upward and Dr. Liz Oaks Pifer.
Upward is currently assistant elementary principal, and works at Austin Elementary School.
Beginning next fall, he will take over the head elementary principal duties of Bob Bowker, who will retire at the end of this school year. Upward will work from Jolley Elementary beginning next school year rather than Austin.
Taking Upward's place at Austin Elementary will be Oaks Pifer, who will also maintain her current role as the Vermillion School District's director of instruction.
"So in effect, this will cut one administrative position," Superintendent Mark Froke said. "That's always been the cry from some in the community."
Upward has worked for the Vermillion School District for 29 years.
"He's been assistant principal at Jolley and Austin, with his primary duties at Austin," Froke said.
Upward has a specialist degree from The University of South Dakota.
Elementary education is nothing new to Oaks Pifer.
"Liz has been in the district for 22 years," Froke said. "She previously was a first grade teacher for nine years, and she taught third grade for three years."
Oaks Pifer has been the district's director of instruction for 10 years.
Oaks Pifer holds an educational doctorate degree from The University of South Dakota.
Upward is currently Title I director for the district. He will continue in that role next school year.
