Don Grass, age 72, of Yankton, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with the Rev. Rodney Veldhuizen officiating. Burial of the urn will be at the Walshtown Cemetery in Mission Hill. Visitation with the family was from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.

Donald Edward Grass was born July 12, 1935 at Mapleton, IA, to Harley and Marjorie (Palmer) Grass. Don and his family moved to Vermillion when he was 7 years old. At the age of 17 Don joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War.

On April 7, 1958 he married Jannette Simonsen in Yankton. After their marriage, they lived in Vermillion and Don worked as a plumber for Thompson Lumber Company. In 1963 they moved to Yankton and Don worked for Ray Krovoza Plumbing and then for Joe Vinatieri Plumbing. Around 1972 he started his own business, Don's Plumbing and Heating. Don also operated the Yankton Drive-In Theater. He retired from the plumbing business in the early 1980s. He then drove a cross-country truck for 23 years, working for several companies.

Don was the disaster coordinator for the Red Cross in the 1970s. He was also a Boy Scout leader for a number of years and was involved in several other community activities. Don enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Jannette Grass of Yankton; three children, Marc (Rhonda) Grass of Bellevue, NE, Annette (Jeff) Haberman of St. Helena, NE, and Julie (Dean) Jansen of Yankton; eight grandchildren; mother, Marj Grass of Vermillion; one brother, Tom (Connie) Grass of Yankton; and two sisters, Janet (Ron) Watts of Wentzville, MO, and Barbara Grass-Rothshadl of Vermillion.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Harley; sister, Shirley Anderson; and brother, Chuck Grass.
