Opening Thursday, Jan. 17, the exhibit continues through Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the Main Gallery of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. A reception for the show is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
"Selections from the Morningside College Art Collection" features work from close to 40 internationally renowned modern artists, including Jim Dine, Jean Dubuffet, Helen Frankenthaler and Jasper Johns. Comprised largely of works on paper, the show draws mostly from the important art collection donated to Sioux City, IA's Morningside College by local resident Helen Levitt.
USD Art Galleries has a tradition of showcasing work from major area art collections and art institutions.
"This is an important educational service to the community providing residents with insight on some of the great visual arts resources in the region," said John A. Day, director of the University Art Galleries. "Art collecting is a surprising and vital part of Midwestern culture. This fact goes mostly unrecognized by the public because many of the collectors are fairly private about their activities."
Day hopes exhibitions such as "Selections From Morningside College Art Collection" will encourage other individuals and institutions to become systematic art collectors.
