Services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Judy Johnson officiating. Burial will be at BluffView Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with prayer service Friday at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.
VanDale Larson was born June 27, 1924, the son of Aldric John and Alma Marie (Berg). He was born on the family farm southwest of Beresford. He attended the Beresford schools.
On March 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Erma Evonne Davis in Luverne, MN. From this union were born three children.
Vonnie was a prominent businessman in the Vermillion community for 25 years. He was owner and operator of the Quality IGA Supermarket from 1953-1978.
He had many interests and hobbies. Most recently, he enjoyed his antique car collection. He was a member of the Dakota Classic Cruisers where he took many honors with his cars, his prize possession being his 1951 Studebaker. In his earlier years, he was a member of the Vermillion Boat Club and the Sioux Falls Sheriff's Posse. He also loved to golf, go camping, listen to country music and work in the yard. He loved the Christmas season and for the past 30 years decorated his yard each year for others in the community and surrounding area to enjoy.
He served in the Pacific during World War II. Since 1991, he has enjoyed the annual reunions and the camaraderie of fellow members of the 1874th Aviation Engineer Battalion. He was also a member of the Vermillion VFW, Eagles Club and the Yankton Moose Club.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.
The most important aspect of his life was his family. He was a very loving and caring husband and father. He and his wife, Erma, were always together, involved in one of their favorite pastimes or with one of the children or grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Erma; two daughters, Barbara Mullally, Rapid City, and Linda Hoesing (husband Mike), Viborg; and son, Van (wife Barb), Vermillion; eight grandchildren, Teresa Mullally, Rapid City, Mason Mullally, Apache Junction, AZ, Michelle Gaertner (Chad), Hurley, Aaron Hoesing (Laura), Beresford, Adam Hoesing, Viborg, Laurie Miiller (Lloyd), Alcester, Dustin Larson (Katie), Vermillion, and Nikki Larson, Vermillion; and five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alton and Delsmore (Florence), Vermillion and Verdell (Carol), Palmdale, CA, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
