Luella Knutson was born May 8, 1926 in Centerville to Edward and Myrtle (Duncan) Knutson. She grew up on a farm with her brother Merle, and graduated from Wakonda High School in 1944. She attended Yankton College for two years, getting her teaching degree. Luella married Loren Henderson on June 8, 1946, and taught at Colfax, for two years.
She enjoyed meeting and talking with people of all ages, and became an avid reader, and collected glass chickens. As long as her health permitted, she and Grandpa attended their grandsons sporting events; she was their biggest fan.
Grandma's house was the guys' stop for treats, showers, and sometimes even cash. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren, and seeing new places, and life in general. She saw the humor in many little things. She was very grateful for special friends and neighbors Terry and Nathan Peterson.
Luella is survived by her husband, Loren of Vermillion; two daughters, Suzann Henderson, and Lori (Roger) Gilbertson, all of Vermillion; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Knutson of Park Rapids, MN; four grandchildren, Cori (Mark) Herz, Jeff Gilbertson, Danny Gilbertson, and Ryan Gilbertson; and two great- grandchildren, Jared and Kyle Herz.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Merle.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion, with burial to follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery rural Wakonda. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.
