New officers appointed to local police department
The Vermillion Police Department has announced the appointment of two new police officers. Bryan Beringer, 24 and David Kyte, 29, were selected from 40 applicants for the positions.

Beringer is a native of Pierre, and is currently enrolled at The University of South Dakota. He is also a member of the Army National Guard.

Kyte is a Vermillion native and holds a degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Beringer and Kyte will begin their training with the department on March 3. Their training will entail 12 weeks of field training with the department and the completion of the state's 12 week academy in Pierre.

The addition of Beringer and Kyte will place the department at full staffing. In 2008, the Vermillion City Council provided funding in the police department budget for an additional patrol officer position.

The current authorized staffing for the department is 18 certified officers and three non-certified positions.
