A public hearing will be held by the Union County Commission Monday, March 3 on Hyperion Resource's request to turn 3,800 acres north of Elk Point into a planned development district for a $10 billion oil refinery.
The meeting, to be held in the Elk Point-Jefferson High School auditorium, will begin at 5 p.m.
Union County planning officials in January voted to recommend that county commissioners approve the rezoning request by Hyperion Resources of Dallas. The board's 4-1 vote followed more than four hours of public testimony at the school auditorium in Elk Point.
The Hyperion refinery would process 400,000 barrels of thick Canadian crude each day. Company executives say that would help the U.S. reduce its dependence on overseas oil.
