Tanager girls unable to stop Quarrier effort
In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Dell Rapids Quarriers 56-36 in girls' basketball Jan. 31 at home.

VHS was down just one at halftime.

"We played a great team tonight," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "The end score does not indicate how close the game was. It's been difficult this season to put together a cohesive unit.

"We've juggled injuries and playing several different teams we have some players that are more successful in different styles of play. With the season winding down, we don't have a lot of time to polish up on what we are trying to accomplish," he said.

The Tanagers fell behind 16-14 after the first quarter, trailed 27-26 after the second period, and then trailed 39-28 after the third quarter.

The loss dropped VHS to a record of 7-8, while Dell Rapids improved to 15-1.

VHS hit 6 of 16 three-pointers and hit 4 of 8 from the line. The Tanagers made 13 of 41 field goals, while Dell Rapids was 23 of 54 from the field. Dell Rapids connected on 2 of 7 three-pointers and sank 8 of 14 free throw tries.

Despite the score, the Tanagers had some good individual performances.

"Sophie (Nehlich-Arobba) played her best game, knocking down some shots and keeping us close in the first half," coach Parish said. "She has put in a lot of time shooting the ball on our off days and it is really starting to show. In fact, a lot of our kids have been putting in some extra time working on their games and shooting the basketball on Saturdays and Sundays.

"That extra dedication and effort is going to help us get over the hump eventually. We really feel that we are capable of competing wih some of the top teams in the state; it's just going to take a little chemistry to get us clicking," he said.
