"The Vermillion Tanagers have brought back a new state champion, Senior Thomas Mollet. Mollet's state championship was a rematch of last week's regional tournament in Yankton," said coach Casey O'Connor. "I knew if Thomas would be the aggressor from his feet, he would win the match. If you are a shooting heavyweight anymore, you have a huge advantage. Thomas took a shot with 15 seconds left in the match to win. Thomas will be continuing his athletic career in the fall by playing football at Black Hills State.

"Senior Luke Heine finsihed his Tanager wrestling career with a second place finish," he said. "Luke's match was also a rematch of last week's regional tournament. Luke finished his career with a varsity record of 140-42, qualifying for the state tournament five consecutive years with a fifth, first and second place finish over the past three.

"Luke will also be continuing his athletic career," the coach said, "by attending Augustana College in the fall to wrestle. Both of our qualifying seniors seniors will be missed not only in the lineup, but also in the practice room."

O'Connor noted that Sophomore Nick Mart finished seventh in the 189 pound class. This year's state competition is the second consecutive tournament he's wrestled in with a top eight finish.

"We were not able to achieve our goal of placing as a team this year," O'Connor said. "We really let the first round get away from us from the very beginning. In this tournament, we really needed our guys to advance through the wrestlebacks; unfortunately, we were unable to make that happen.

"We certainly have things to discuss," he said, "work on in the off season, and set our goals for the next wrestling season beginning in November."
