Donald E. McFarland was born March 12, 1924 to Dan and Clara (Mackenstadt) McFarland in Wagner. He attended country school in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, and graduated from Ravinia. He worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Navy on April 14, 1945, and was discharged on Aug. 23, 1946.
He worked at Black Acre Farms near Armour, then worked as a mechanic at Fechner Motors in Armour, and later worked for Groseth Implement in Armour until 1973.

Don and Joe Sanders started an automobile repair shop together which he later operated himself. He retired in 1995. He enjoyed tinkering, gardening, and the outdoors. He was a member and past deacon of Grandview Reformed Church, Armour, and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Bernita Fae McFarland, Armour; four children, Dawn Conrad, Burbank, David McFarland and wife, Carla, Pella, IA, Thomas McFarland and wife, Kelli, Huron, and Timothy McFarland and wife, Beth, Fargo, ND; a sister, Yvonne Bowen, Geddes; Gerald McFarland and wife, Karen, Armour and Lowell McFarland and wife, Darlene, Armour; 11 grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Greg Conrad, a father-in-law, John Brower, and a brother-in-law, Don Bowen.
