Honoring our veterans

To the editor:

It began with an idea. Today, we look back with gratitude and appreciation for all those that have been an aspect of our efforts in realizing the first Veterans Resource Center in South Dakota. We have a deep belief that we're all connected in some way to the service and sacrifice our veterans and their families make for each of us as a society.

We can look back as a community with gratitude for all the individuals, organizations, businesses and leaders that believed in honoring our community of veterans and those that sacrifice through the service of their loved ones. Today we have a community center in which veterans, their families and community members can connect with one another, and we have the opportunity to lead other communities in learning to return services to those who have served us.

Veterans – thank you for your service and for teaching all of us what it means to give back to the society in which we all live and in which we are all connected. This center belongs to you and because of so many people that believed in an idea, our community can take pride in all that we have accomplished and all that we are doing to honor our veterans and our rich heritage of military service within this community and our state as a whole. The idea continues to grow and we need each of you.

Vermillion Are you eligible?

To the editor:

The IRS needs special help this year from the public.

Starting in May, economic stimulus payments of up to $600 for individuals ($1,200 for married couples) will be issued by the IRS.

Filers also get $300 for each eligible child.

To get a payment, people must file a 2007 tax return. That's it.

But here's where Uncle Sam needs a hand. Millions of people are eligible but may not know it. These are certain retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who normally don't file a tax return. Some may not have touched a tax form in years. But, they must file a 2007 tax return or they'll miss out on getting their stimulus payment.

Please help spread the word to friends, family, neighbors and community organizations.

People who have at least $3,000 from wages or certain benefits from Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs may be eligible, but they need to file a return. We'll do the rest. Visit www.irs.gov for details and the 1040A-3 package that these filers can use to qualify for the stimulus payment, or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040.

Successful efforts

To the editor:

As chairperson of MDA's Shamrocks Against Dystrophy http://www.mda.org/help/natevents.html#shamroxShamrocks, I want to take a moment to thank businesses and patrons in the Vermillion area for their generous participation in our 2008 campaign. I'm delighted to say that this year's fund raising efforts were a great success.

Those little green and gold Shamrock mobiles sold by local businesses help support MDA's vital programs of research http://www.mda.org/research, health care services http://www.mda.org/services.html and public education right here in Vermillion and across the country.

On behalf of all the individuals and families coping with muscle-wasting diseases, I send a big warm "thank you" to Vermillion residents – you've certainly put a smile in these Irish eyes!

Sincerely,
Maureen McGovern
