Local students audition for All-State band festival

Two Vermillion Middle School band students, seventh grader Bryant Yang and eighth grader Jenelle Solberg, were selected by competitive audition to participate in the ninth annual Middle School All-State Band Festival on Feb. 29-March 1, in Pierre. There were 530 auditions for this year's festival bands, with approximately 150 students from 66 schools selected to participate.

The All-State band festival is sponsored by the South Dakota Music Educators Association and features two days of rehearsals and master classes, culminating in a grand finale concert. Guest conductors for the event were Dr. Steven Sudduth, Director of Bands at The University of South Dakota, and Don Downs, Director of Bands at Stevens High School in Rapid City.

Bryant is a student of Vermillion Middle School band director Becky Rider, and Jenelle is a student of Director of Bands John Alpers and private oboe teacher Lori Thomas.
