Scheidel places 2nd in recent spelling bee

A Scotland girl's ability to discern the correct spelling of the verb "discern" made her the 2008 Scripps Howard Southeast South Dakota Regional Spelling Bee champion March 3.

Kennidy Asche, a seventh grader from Scotland, made the correct spelling in the ninth round to capture the title and advance to the state competition in Sioux Falls this spring.

Dylan Scheidel, an eighth grader from Vermillion, finished second, while Chance Sorenson, an eighth grader from Yankton Middle School, was third.

A total of 23 students from area schools participated in Monday night's spelling bee, which was held at the Yankton Middle School theater.

The local spelling bee was sponsored by the Yankton Press & Dakotan.
