Vermillion Public School District recognized for accreditation status at Chicago conference

The Vermillion Public School District was recognized at the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement Annual Conference in Chicago on March 16-18, for achieving NCA and AdvancED District Accreditation Status.

The Vermillion Public School District is only the third school district in the state of South Dakota to achieve the status of NCA and AdvancED District Accreditation. NCA District Accreditation recognizes that increasing student achievement involves more than improving instruction. It is a result of how well all the parts of the education system-the district, school, and classroom-work together to meet the needs of students.

To achieve District Accreditation status, the school district must meet research based standards that are related to a systems approach to improving student performance results over time. In addition, the district hosts an external team of peer reviewers consisting of teachers and administrators from South Dakota and surrounding states. During the three day visit, the team interviewed school board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents and community members and visited each of the school buildings within the district. The team developed a report identifying the strengths of the district and opportunities for improvement.

Dr. Angie Koppang, South Dakota NCA Director stated, "The Vermillion School District should be commended for their efforts to move to this next level of accreditation to ensure a quality education for their students. Pursing NCA/AdvancED District Education shows the commitment of the school board, school district personnel and the community to a high level of quality in the educational system as well as a commitment to continuous improvement."
