L.W. "Bill" Rasmussen, 92, of Vermillion, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.

Bill was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Lincoln County, South Dakota, to August and Marth (Engel) Rasmussen. He graduated from Beresford High School in 1935.

He worked at Fruen Elevator in Beresford, and then managed the Farmers Elevator in Vermillion for 48 years, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of the Senior Citizens, the VFW and the Eagles in Vermillion. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion.

Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and while in the service he spent time in the Philippines. He married Marjorie Thorson in December 1940 in Beresford. She died Jan. 15, 2008.

He was an avid sportsmen, and was involved with Junior Legion Baseball. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, horseshoe pitching and golf.

He followed USD Coyote football and basketball, Vermillion High School sports, the Minnesota Twins the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Braves.

Bill is survived by three sons, Dennis (Beverly Ann), Bluffton, SC, Gene (Susan) and Craig (Katherine) both of Vermillion; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Wevik, Beresford; and a brother, "Skee" of White River.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion with the Rev. Ed Anderson officiating. Burial followed in BluffView Cemetery with military graveside services by Vermillion VFW Clay Post #3061.

Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be donated to the Vermillion Senior Citizens Center, 320 W. Main, Vermillion, SD 57069
