Area students receive Sanford Vermillion Medical Center and Dakota Hospital Foundation scholarships

Area students receive Sanford Vermillion Medical Center and Dakota Hospital Foundation scholarships Sanford Vermillion Medical Center (SVMC) and Dakota Hospital Foundation recently awarded $4,000 in academic scholarships to area high school students. Health Career Scholarship Taera McDonald, senior at Vermillion High School was awarded a 2008 SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Healthcare Career Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. McDonald will be attending The University of South Dakota in the fall of 2008. Her goal is to attend medical school to become a radiologist. Taera is the daughter of Ben McDonald of Vermillion and Joan Fitch of Tyndall. Justin Hauger, Irene-Wakonda High School was awarded a 2008 SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Healthcare Career Scholarship in the amount of $500. Hauger will be attending The University of South Dakota in the fall of 2008. His goal is to one day become a chiropractor. Justin is the son of David and Deb Hauger of Volin. Brittany Marie Wastell, Beresford High School was awarded a 2008 SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Healthcare Career Scholarship in the amount of $500. Wastell will major in nursing and Spanish in the fall of 2008 at The University of South Dakota. Her goal is to be a pediatric nurse in South Dakota. Brittany is the daughter of Terry and Stacy Wastell of Beresford. The purpose of the SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Healthcare Career Scholarship is to identify and retain outstanding Vermillion area students dedicated to furthering their education in a health related occupation at The University of South Dakota. Local students, Erin Rasmussen and Alexa Walker of Vermillion High School were each awarded a 2008 SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Employee Dependent Scholarship. Erin Rasmussen was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Rasmussen plans to attend The University of South Dakota in Vermillion majoring in health sciences. Her goal is to attend medical school and become a family practice physician practicing in the state of South Dakota. Rasmussen is the daughter of Kay and Ric Rasmussen of Vermillion. Kay is the laboratory manager at Sanford Vermillion Medical Center. Alexa Walker was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Walker plans to attend The University of South Dakota majoring in biology and minor in Spanish. Her goal is to attend optometry school. Walker states that she hopes to be able to travel to areas less fortunate than the United States on mission trips to aid our global community. Alexa is the daughter of Dr. Vicki and Lanny Walker of Vermillion. Dr. Walker is a Family Medicine physician at Sanford Clinic Vermillion. The purpose of the SVMC and Dakota Hospital Foundation Employee Dependent Scholarship is to identify outstanding achievement on the part of employees��? children who are planning to pursue a post-secondary education in a two or four-year college, university or vocational-technical program.
