Red Sox split double-header in Iowa By: Parker Knox
Sportswriter Vermillion Red Sox hitters had their bats warmed up and ready for the start of the amateur baseball season Sunday.�? The Sox scored 20 runs but still managed only a split in a doubleheader at Larchwood, IA. The Red Sox registered a 9-4 win in the first game as Jared Hydish went four innings as a starter to pick up the pitching win. Tyler Thacker finished the contest with three innings of relief work. Robin Chute led the offensive attack with three doubles.�? Jim McNaughton contributed three hits, and Cole Knippling had two hits. ��?We came out hitting well for the first game of the season,� Coach Kirk Sorenson commented. Larchwood started strong in the nightcap against starter Jon Speed.�? Sorenson said his starter was still a little rusty from the long winter, ��?but we let him work it out.� Brad Donovan came on in relief and held down the Iowans for awhile.�? He actually took the pitching loss because, despite their early disadvantage, the Red Sox caught up to Larchwood in the fifth but couldn��?t hold the lead. Chute continued hot at the plate with a two-run homer and two more hits.�? Brett Fischer and Colby Lessmann each had three hits for the Red Sox. The Red Sox will play at home at Prentis Park against the Renner Monarchs next Wednesday, May 28, and have a game at South Sioux City, NE the following night.
