Swimmer drowns in river The Clay County Sheriff��?s Office received a report at 1:46 p.m. Sunday of a swimmer missing in the Missouri River just downstream from the Vermillion/Newcastle Bridge on SD Hwy. 19. Clay County Sheriff��?s units as well as Vermillion/Clay County Rescue Squad responded and recovered the body of Richard Darrell, age 19 of Maskell, NE at 3:30 p.m. Witnesses stated Darrell was wading along a sandbar among a group of five people including his 7-year-old brother. According to witnesses, the two brothers fell into a deep drop off in the cold water and immediately began to struggle. Darrell was able to push his brother to safety on the bank but continued to struggle himself and went underwater. Rescuers entered the water immediately in an attempt to find him but were unsuccessful, finding him nearly two hours later in a deep hole in the same location he was last seen.
