United Way assists local backpack program

United Way assists local backpack program During 2008, the United Way of Vermillion is helping to support 19 non-profit agencies and programs and one of them is the Backpack Program sponsored by the Vermillion Welcome Table. The mission of The Welcome Table is to share the gift of hospitality in the Vermillion area, primarily through sharing a good meal with friendly company. It is a volunteer driven non-profit organization, which provides a place where groups and individuals can learn and grow as they share their time, talent and resources with the rest of the community. Beyond the existing meal program which nurtures and feeds about 200 people weekly (many of those being children), the Welcome Table will continue its Back To School program for the summer of 2008. In August 2008, they hope to provide families with children, back-to-school supplies, backpacks, haircuts and other miscellaneous supplies in preparation for a new academic year. It is estimated the Welcome Table will be assisting 175 to 200 children. The Welcome Table uses the United Way support and funds from churches and individuals for most of the actual supplies. In addition they plan on continuing the winter clothing program where it will supply vouchers to families for winter clothing. The Welcome Table will make every effort to continue to use Vermillion merchants for this program and also continue the Christmas gift program for children and the childrenâ??s book program as well. New Board Member Greg Paquette, manager of the local McDonaldâ??s, has recently been elected to the United Way of Vermillion Board of Directors. â??United Way of Vermillion is very pleased to have Greg join our board of directors,â? said Deb Christensen, board president. â??The United Way Board will soon start planning its 2009 campaign and we are looking forward to Gregâ??s enthusiasm and participation.â?
