United Way helps with Senior Center programs Featured Article
Vermillion Senior Center The Vermillion Senior Citizens Service provides educational, health and social events necessary to the senior community of Vermillion and the surrounding area. These services are provided in a facility conducive to all cultures that seek friendly surroundings deemed necessary to extending a senior adults life in the Vermillion Community. Memberships are available to citizens age 55 and older at $20 per year. A nutrition program is provided at the senior center by an outside agency known as Dakota Senior Meals (ROCS), with a reduced cost to those eligible adults 60 and older. The Vermillion Senior Center continues to expand and grow meeting the needs of senior citizens in the community. The center is open every weekday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the seniors to enjoy a variety of card games, dominoes, puzzles and bingo. The center subscribes to newspapers and magazines for the enjoyment of seniors to sit in the lounge and socialize. The Center provides puzzles and musical instruments for the seniors to enjoy and express their talents. Throughout the year presentations on elder laws, senior health and wellness, tax preparation, etc are presented at the center plus scheduled visits from SHIINE (Senior Health Information and Insurance Education) to assist seniors with Medicare issues. The staff at the senior center is responsible for providing events and fundraising activities throughout the year to help defray some of the general expenses. More importantly, the Center offers events like the senior fair (health and education activities) or fun, inexpensive activities like potlucks, bingo and summer barbecues as a way for the seniors to come together and socialize. It is our goal as an organization to provide educational, informational and socialization opportunities to the senior citizens of our community in as many different ways as possible. The staff is continually trying to find volunteer leaders from the executive board and from the community to chair committees for increasing the membership of the center, planning and assisting with all fundraising projects, determine building facility needs (inside and outside) and to get representation out into the community and share our visions and needs with other organizations and businesses.
