USD Playhouse to present The Taffetas, a musical journey through the fabulous ?50s The University of South Dakota Playhouse will bring the sweet harmonies and bebop of the ?50s to the stage when it presents The Taffetas, June 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and June 15 at 2 p.m. in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. Conceived by Rick Lewis, The Taffetas is a fresh and fun musical revue that brings to life popular music of girl groups from the 1950s. The Taffetas focuses on four singing sisters from Muncie, IN, who are making their national television debut on the weekly show Spotlight on Music. Using the format of a television show, Lewis pays tribute to sounds of The McGuire Sisters, The Fontane Sisters and The Chordettes, while featuring such hits as Johnny Angel, Dedicated to the One I Love, Where The Boys Are, Little Darlin? and You Don?t Own Me. The Taffetas playfully transports audiences to an era of watching Sunday night television on a twelve-inch black and white screen. The Taffetas, which preceded Forever Plaid by two years, launched the craze for nostalgia when it opened Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1989. It has since gone on to be performed around the world and has been joined by other Rick Lewis creations, The Cardigans, A Cardigan Christmas and A Taffeta Christmas, as delightful musical journeys down memory lane. The Taffetas is family-friendly entertainment, enjoyed by the young and young at heart. Darla Earnest, professional singer/actress and adjunct professor of theatre at USD, leads the cast of The Taffetas. Ms. Earnest has performed internationally on both musical theatre and opera stages and as a concert soloist with numerous orchestras, including the South Dakota Symphony, the Orlando Philharmonic and Daytona Beach Symphony. She has also sung in the highly-acclaimed Voices of Liberty at EPCOT. Jessie Atkinson (Sioux City, IA), Anna Auchampach (Deadwood) and Elizabeth Wright (Yankton), students in USD?s musical theatre program, join Ms. Earnest to form The Taffetas. Charlotte Guyette, associate professor of theatre, directs The Taffetas, while Bruce Earnest, artistic director of the Playhouse, directs the music and Jonnie Stapleton (South Sioux City, NE) adds choreography. Tickets for The Taffetas, which is sponsored by Avera McKennan, are $14 for adults and $9 for students (K-University). Reservations can be made by calling the USD Playhouse box office at (605) 677-5400.
