Vermillion Blaze play in Golden Girls’ Tourney

Vermillion Blaze play in Golden Girls' Tourney Vermillion Blaze U-14 softball team traveled to Norfolk, NE June 7 and 8 to participate in the Golden Girls Tournament.�? Saturday was pool play. In the U-14 division there were 11 teams, and the Blazeâ�?�?s first game was against the Twin River Rockers.�?  The Blaze team only gave up one run on two hits.�? The Blaze finished the game with six runs. Ellen Brown had two singles and scored twice.�?  Emily McClelland hit a single and also scored. Courtney Johnson, just coming back from an injury, helped her team with a double and Lizzy Bye jacked two triples and one single.�?  Bye was also the winning pitcher walking no one and striking out eight. Sami Girard did an amazing job behind the plate catching and calling pitches. Outfielders Shelby Christopherson, Brown, and Mariah Dodson did an excellent job backing up the infield.�?  Coaches Chris Girard and Shelly Bye were very proud of the girls. They played as a team and communicated well. In the second game the Blaze took on the Bellevue Shockers. The Blaze had a hard time getting their bats going. Bailey Carlson was the only Blaze to score. Brown, Claire Jones, Carlson and Johnson all had hits. The Shockers ended up winning the game 4-1. Bye was the losing pitcher walking one and striking out five. In the final game of the day the Blaze took on the Omaha Lazers. The Blaze played superbly and had a lot of fun this game.�? They got their bats working and ran the bases well.�?  Brown, Bye and Lexi Regnerus all scored once and Carlee Sorensen scored twice. Johnson, Girard and Christopherson all helped them score by getting hits. Carlson at second and McClelland at third did a great job defensively with a lot of put outs. McClelland replaced Beth Szymonski at third base, due to a recent injury in basketball. Bye was the winning pitcher allowing one run, two hits and striking out five The Blaze ended up getting first in their pool having the best record 2-1. Despite high hopes for Sundays games, the Blaze were very disappointed when the fields were ruined by the rain and games were canceled.
