It involves local citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials form over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. National Night Out is designed to: â?¢ Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; â?¢ Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; â?¢ Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and â?¢ Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Donâ??t miss out on this yearâ??s event. If you thought last year was fun, be sure to mark your calendars for Tuesday, Aug. 5. Once again, it will be held at Prentis Park. Similar to last year, with the cooperation of Vermilllionâ??s Chamber of Commerce, the Vermillion Police Department is again sponsoring a cookout in the northwest corner of Prentis Park from 5 to 9 p.m. Hy-Vee will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and pop at a cost of $1 per person. Tons of fun will be happening with all of the activities planned, such as: dunk tank, train rides for kids, lollipop tree for kids, hole in one golf for kids, fishing pond for kids, dinosaur egg dig for kids, wheel of fortune for kids and jumping castle for kids. Music will be provided by Christopher Heck. Neighborhoods in Vermillion are also encouraged to have cookouts, or block get-togethers of their own. If your neighborhood or block is planning on hosting their own event, in conjunction, please notify the Vermillion Police Department so officers can stop by and get to know everyone on a more personal level. Together, we can strengthen police-community relations and all â??Take A Bite out of Crime.â? We hope to see you there.
