Arthur Bridges Arthur P. Bridges, 92, of Vermillion, died Wednesday, July 9, at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital. Arthur was born Sept. 9, 1915 in Hanwell, West London to Thomas and Ethel Bridges. He attended school through eighth grade, and on Aug. 31, 1935 married Winifred Searle in Brentford, England. In 1939, he joined the Royal Scotts Army as a paratrooper serving for six years and was stationed in Italy and Egypt. After the military, Arthur worked for Rockware Glass Company making glass jars and vases and was a part-time chimney sweep. He and his wife came to the U.S. in 1959 and lived in Hawarden, IA until 1961 when they moved to Elmonte, CA. Arthur worked as a machinist for Kaiser Aluminum in Elmonte and they moved to Vermillion from California in 1999, and Winifred died in 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Norman, three brothers, and two sisters. Arthur is survived by a daughter, Ann Van Beek of Hudson, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Bridges of Palmdale, CA; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, with a private family burial at a later date.
