Blaze U-14 champions for Lowell Rang Memorial tourney The Vermillion Blaze claimed the U-14 softball championship the weekend of June 28 and 29 in Mitchell. The blaze went undefeated in the two-day tourney. Game 1 The blaze got off to a good start in the tourney with a 13-5 win over Sioux Falls rage. Lizzy Bye pitched four of five innings striking out four and allowing no hits. Claire Jones was the other pitcher in the Blaze win. The offense was led by Sami Girard who collected three singles along with two RBIs Bye with two doubles and four RBIâ�?�?s. Courtney Johnson and Carlee Sorensen helped their team to victory by each hit ting two singles. Ellen Brown, Shelby Christopherson, Mariah Dodson, Emily McClelland and Lexi Regnerus each had a hit for the victorious Blaze. Game 2 The Blaze continued their winning streak in game two, banging out a 15-3 win over Mitchell Cor- Trust. Bye was the winning pitcher behind some great defense. The defense committed no errors in the four inning winning. â�?�?The whole team played well offensively and defensivelyâ�? said coach Shelly Bye. Every girl on the team did their part. Game 3 The Blaze ended the day on Saturday with another impressive win pounding the Mitchell Hurricanes 11-4. Bye was the Blazeâ�?�?s winning pitcher giving up four hits, while striking out seven and allowing no walks. Brown and Jones did an amazing job on the bases each scoring twice. â�?�?These two girls are both quick, not afraid to steal and they make things happen,â�? said coach Bye. Other Blaze players to make it across home plate were Girard, Johnson, McClelland and Regnerus. Bye also helped her cause by scoring three times in the win. Game 4 The Sunday single elimination portion of t he tourney began with a repeat from Saturday night game. The Blaze claimed a convincing 14-3 trouncing of the Hurricanes from Mitchell. Bye was in control on the pitcherâ�?�?s mound facing nineteen batters, giving up five hits, striking out eight and walking only one. Bye was also the offensive hero of the game collecting four hits, a single, double and two triples along with four RBIâ�?�?s. The Blaze had several other players to add to the list of hits. Christopherson, Girard and Johnson each added two singles. Jones, McClelland and Dodson each had one single. Sorensen and Bailey Carlson each scored twice and Brown and Regnerus each added one run. Championship Game In the Championship game the Vermillion Blaze took on The Sioux Falls Fury. The Blaze were on fire winning the championship game 12-2 in five innings. Bye was the winning pitcher allowing only two hits. The defensive heroes were Carlson and McClelland, everything that came their way they knocked down and made the play. We canâ�?�?t leave out our awesome first baseman Regnerus who caught everything thrown her way and our catcher Girard who called an excellent game. Offensively Byeâ�?�?s bat was on fire getting a hit every time she came up to bat and crossed the plate four times. As customary Brown did an incredible job running the bases and scored three times. Other Blaze to make it across home were Jones, Girard, Regnerus, McClelland and Sorensen. Coaches Chris Girard and Shelly Bye were very proud of the girls. They have practiced for a long time and deserve a championship.
