This Week in Greysox Baseball By Joe "MOJO" Reiser On Tuesday, July 29 in Elk Point, the Vermillion Greysox kept their hitting gloves on as they outscored Larchwood, IA 14-13 to win the District 7 Championship. The Greysox were down early as Kyle Mollet?s return to the mound proved unsuccessful. Larchwood pounded the baseball in the first inning and sent manager Mark Clark to the bullpen looking for relief. That relief came in the form of Rusty Jensen. Jensen pitched 7 and 2/3 innings to get the win for the Sox. Greysox batters did some fine hitting of their own as they deposited four home runs over the outfield fence. Brett Mockler went deep with a three run blast in the second inning, followed by Jeff Gilbertson?s two run dinger in the six-run sixth inning. Solo shots by Aaron Baedke and Jason Dietrich would push the score to 14 for the Greysox. A Larchwood three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth would leave the opponents from the north one run shy as solid defense in the ninth closed the game. Shortstop Ryan Bak made the last out in a circus fashion, finishing with a bare handed grab. The ?Budlight Player of the Game was awarded to Jeff Gilbertson for his two-run homer and some fine glove work in the outfield. With this victory the Greysox take the District 7 title and head for the South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Mitchell, at Cadwell Park. Times will be in the newspaper. And one other thing ? I would like to thank Brett Mockler for the information provided today as I was sick as a dog and unable to attend the game. Congratulations to the Vermillion Greysox and do well at State.
