Vermillion community blood drive scheduled July 24 Community Blood Bank?s bloodmobile will be holding blood drives in Vermillion on Thursday, July 24. The first blood drive will be held at Wal-Mart Vermillion from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The second donation site will be at Sanford Vermillion Medical Center from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to donate blood, save a life and support the local blood supply. All blood types are in critical need. ?During the summer months, Community Blood Bank sees a 30% reduction in blood donations and struggles to maintain an adequate blood supply to be used for trauma, surgery, cancer and burn patients. The reduction in donations is mainly due to people forgetting to donate blood while they are involved in vacations and summer activities. This blood drive will help boost the supply of blood available through the end of July, states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. Community Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products to 29 area hospitals including Vermillion, Brookings Hospital, Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown, Clear Lake, Madison, Avera McKennan, Sanford Medical Center, V.A. Medical Center and Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. It is recommended that you eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating. Please bring an I.D. with you. A person can donate every 56 days. For more information or to make an appointment, call 624-2611. Walk-ins are welcome.
