Dean Larsen Dean F. Larsen, 83, of Wakonda died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Dean was born June 8, 1925 on the family farm southeast of Wakonda to Thomas and Helen (Mart) Larsen. He attended Pleasant Valley country school and graduated from Wakonda High School in 1943. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict in Korea, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1952. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served as commander of the Gingrich-Dixon Legion Post 13 in Wakonda. He was also a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus and a lifelong member of the St. Patrickâ�?�?s Catholic Church in Wakonda. Dean served on the parish council and on the board of the St. Patrickâ�?�?s Cemetery for many years. He was a member of the board of directors for Clay-Union Electric Corp. and served as their president for a time. He was also a member of the SDREA board, a lifelong farmer, and still resided on the family farm. Dean married Marlene Johnson on Sept. 19, 1959 at St. Patrickâ�?�?s Catholic Church in Wakonda. He is survived by his wife, Marlene of Wakonda; a daughter, Kristi (Allen) Merrill of Parker; a son, Thomas D. Larsen of Wakonda; two grandchildren, Shane and Katie Merrill of Parker; and his mother-in-law, LaVerne Johnson of Yankton; and brother-in-laws, Burdette (Barbara) Johnson of Sioux Falls, Marvin (Susan) Johnson of Overland Park, KS and many nieces and nephews. Dean was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and will be missed by his family and friends. Funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at the St. Patrickâ�?�?s Catholic Church in Wakonda, with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at the church.
