Professor of history at USD is recipient of ACL award Judith Lynn Sebesta, Ph.D., professor and chairperson of The University of South Dakota Department of History, was presented with The American Classical League?s (ACL) Merita/Meritus Award. This award recognizes distinguished service to the classics profession and to ACL in particular. Sherwin Little, president of ACL, stated that Sebesta?s work, ?has not been only in one or two facets of the discipline, but has ranged over virtually every area of the field. No student or instruction of the classics will have been able to avoid her educational offerings, whether written, spoken, or video-taped.? Sebesta has written hundreds of books, pamphlets, articles and other presentations on topics ranging from Roman women and costuming through classical and medieval Latin poetry to curriculum and methodology. The ACL Award Committee said of Sebesta, ?there has never been a more consistent advocate or a more diligent worker for the classics. This past year, she has assisted with the re-editing of the Latin textbook series, Ecce Romani and is currently writing an article on Roman maternity care. Sebesta received her B.A. from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from Stanford University before joining the faculty of USD in 1972. In addition to working on several major ACL committees, she was ACL vice president for four years and acting vice president for two additional years. Sebesta is currently executive secretary for the National Committee for Latin and Greek and member of the American Philological Association?s Outreach Committee.
